Part of the University of California system, the University of California is located in Davis. It came into existence in 1905 as a University Farm and introduced short courses for farmers in 1908 with around 15 students enrolled. The university started admitting women students by 1918. UCD then became an instruction extension for UC Berkeley. It became an academic general campus of UC system in 1959.
Spread over 5000 acres of land, UC Davis offers more than 100 undergraduate and around 90 graduate programs. Also, it is home to more than 30,000 students coming from all walks of life. The university includes 4 colleges- Engineering, Environmental Science and Agriculture, College of Letters and Sciences. Also, it comprises a number of professional schools in addition to a Graduate School.
Arboretum, with over 15 gardens and around 5,000 tree specimen is one of the major attractions of UC Davis. Also, it maintains an equestrian center, numerous athletic fields, student farms and a sports stadium spread over 110,000 square foot. The university also offers study abroad options to students in more than 30 countries and around 100 partner universities across the globe.
The teaching staff of more than 2,000 faculty members includes over 20 members of National Academy (Sciences), more than 15 members of American Law Institute and more than 10 members of Institute of Medicine among others.
UC Davis has over 240,000 living alumni currently. Prominent personalities of the university include astronauts, CEO of Chevron, entrepreneurs, and numerous actors. The university has expanded considerably over the last century to add professional and graduate programs in numerous fields. Looking ahead, it is now planning to be considered as the best University in the research arena.
